Bio: Hi, my name is Adrian Sanchez. I am passionate about words and languages, particularly Spanish, the language I learned at my mother’s knee. I am curious about how languages change and evolve. I am a qualified Spanish Teacher (CLTA) and a journalist. I have taught in literacy campaigns in Latin America and given Spanish tuition in Spain and in the UK. I would like to share some of my thoughts on the Spanish language; and particularly on what I have learned from my students, who in many ways have become my teachers throughout the years.     Hola Adrian. Although I learned a little bit of Spanish many years ago I don’t have much use for it in Norway (although I came to the rescue of a bewildered Mexican tourist last summer!) but it’s a language I like and I love the Spanish culture and food from my short time in Spain. Espero que disfrutas mis fotos de Noruega 🙂

I have never learnt Spanish – maybe it’s time I revisited that decision, although there is not much opportunity to speak it here at the tip of Africa!     I grew up in an English speaking home, though we’re Mexican-Americans. My parents put me in a Mexican school in Guadalajara, Mexico for my second year of high school. No one spoke a word of English, so I learned Spanish very quickly.

      Thank you! It is never too late to learn a language, particularly now that we have been told that people who speak more than one language fluently have better memories and are more cognitively creative and mentally flexible than monolinguals.

      Dulcinea is a beautiful name. It is the name of the lady with whom Don Quijote, the protagonist of The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote, Cervante’s novel, is in love.

    Hello – Thanks! I love language and literature, and I learned some Spanish in high school, along with French. When I have more time (retirement?), I would like to take it up again to become fluent.

        I did read some classic Spanish literature in high e.g. La zapatera prodigiosa by Federico García Lorca. Lack of time is my primary reason for not being able to read as much as I would like. However, I am now reading the poems of Neruda in English (translations), with original Spanish.

          A good friend of mine once said, “I wish I would be fluent in Spanish to read Pablo Neruda’s poems in its original language”. She studied Spanish for several years until becoming fluent and was able to read not only Neruda but many other Latin American and Spanish writers. Such is the power of literature and poetry.

          I couldn’t help quoting Neruda’s passion in my post “Las palabras”: I love words … they sparkle as pearls of colours, jump as silver fishes, they are foam, thread, metal, dew … I hunt some of them down … they are so beautiful that I want to put all of them in my poem:

          Are you aware that recently unpublished poems by Pablo Neruda were brought together in a new book: Tus pies toco en la sombra y otros poemas inéditos?

    I used to speak Spanish quite well too (and French) but not enough to write poetry eh… though I can read Neruda among others in Spanish 😉 I just love languages and traveling!!! Best to you
